Jan 22, '05 Why We Moved To The Beach

It is another beautiful day here in coastal California. I am so glad we moved to the coast 6 years ago. I only wish we had done it when our children were young. Now it is just the two of us enjoying this wonderful place.

Why did we move to the coast? We were in financial trouble and rented a place for only $875 a month. This included a 4000 square foot two story store house for our business inventory and a small 800+ square foot house. This was on a 32 acre piece of property. We shared the property with another family who lived in the main house. This was a quiet place, far up a canyon with no other close neighbors. A mini ranch.

One day we got a call from the landlord telling us that he was raising our rent and taking the upstairs of our storage building away from us. It was in the rental agreement that we rented the bottom and could use the upstairs. We lost about 1800 square feet of storage space and had to rent three forty foot storage containers which we put behind the building.

How much did he raise the rent? $1600! WOW! Double WOW!! At that time Sharon and I looked at each other and asked, "Where would we LIKE to live". The answer was, "By the ocean". Because of this jerk of a landlord (I will tell you more at another time) we fell into living where we truly love.

Actually we are glad he raised the rent. If he had not raised it, we probably would have stayed there a long time. About two years after we moved a devastating fire swept through that canyon. Here are the results: Fire Where We Lived

We have lived three places since moving here. One place was a mile from the beach. The next was five houses away from the beach and now we are five miles away from the water. That landlord really did us a favor and never knew it.
