Compact Car and Gas Savings

There was a while when all we had to drive was a 5.0 liter V8 GMC 2500 cargo van.  Mileage was very poor.  It is nice to have a compact car and gas savings that go along with it.  The van tank hold 30 gallons and it is scary when we fill it.  The Chevy Cavalier holds 14 gallons and doesn’t break the bank every time we need gas.

I am not sure on the math, but I wonder how close a compact car would come to paying for itself in gas savings over a larger gas guzzling one.  If you actually sat down and figured this out with you actual miles driven each year and cost of fuel, I’ll bet it would be an eye opening experience.

Long ago when we bought a 1978 Honda Civic and got rid of our V8 350HP Chevrolet, I thought the gas saving were paying the payments on the car.  As I remember, it was cheaper to own a new Honda than it was to drive our older Chevy.
