Do It Yourself Propane Fireplace

Commercial portable propane fireplaces sell of about $150.  I decided to try making one myself.  Yesterday, I bought a used Magma marine BBQ ($140 new) at a boater’s swap meet.  It was in great shape.

Next I bought a bag of vermiculite at our local nursery for under $4. Vermiculite is used in the “real” propane fireplaces.

I took the BBQ apart and sprayed it with oven cleaner to get it cleaned it up. .

The Magma came with volcanic rocks, so I put the volcanic rocks on top of the vermiculite. When I lit my new UNDER $10 fire pit, it put out a nice small fire in the volcanic rock. It isn’t as high a flame as in the picture below. I may have to remove the pressure regulator so I get more gas. Regardless it still puts out a pretty little fire.
